Events at Pink Castle Fabrics for January

Happy New Year! Now, let's see what is going on in our classroom this month!

Southeast Michigan Crafters Meet Up

Thursday, January 9th, from 7-10 pm

Sewists Rae Hoekstra of Made By Rae and Karen LePage of One Girl Circus host a monthly sew in in the classroom of Pink Castle Fabrics. (It is usually the first Thursday of the month, but it was moved because of the proximity to New Years). It's a great time to hang out and work on projects, get advice from (at least) two great seamstresses, and chat, shop, and sew! It is free, but you need to register to reserve a spot, as space is limited.

20 Popular Quilt Blocks with Rossie Hutchinson and Brenda Ratliff

Friday, January 17th, from 6:30-7:30 pm

Rossie Hutchinson and Brenda Ratliff will be giving a free lecture in the classroom where they will focus on twenty popular quilt blocks and how they have been used by traditional and modern quilters. This lecture is open to everyone; those who are already quilters as well as those who are just getting interested in this exciting craft!

This is an RSVP only event. All RSVPs are being handled by Ann Arbor's Rec & Ed department--look for it in the Winter catalog (p. 31) or register here.

Rossie Hutchinson is the founder of the influential Flickr group Fresh Modern Quilts. Her quilts have appeared in magazines, books, and quilt shows around the country. She also creates and sells custom plexiglass shapes for itajime shibori dyeing and other uses.

Brenda Ratliff is the owner of Pink Castle Fabrics, and blogs at Just a Bit Frayed. She cooks, quilts, and makes bags in her free time.

Improvisational Patchwork (Improv 101) with Rossie Hutchinson of Fresh Modern Quilts

Monday, January 20th 6-9 PM

In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn to limit decision-making while continually piecing.  You’ll also learn to make decisions quickly, avoid falling in love with your answers, and accept change when it occurs.  We’re going to make new memories and form new habits that will free you up for future adventures.  You’ll leave class with perfectly imperfect quilt blocks and a the confidence to stitch into the unknown.

Here is an example of blocks created in a previous class.

Students need bring only their sewing machines, thread, and a rotary cutter and mat or pair of scissors and then just go with the flow. Fabric will be provided. We can also rent you a sewing machine.

This is one of two improv classes that Pink Castle Fabrics offers, the other - Improv Crosses, Plusses, and Cabins (Improv 201) - will build on the skills taught here.
