Camp Stitchalot Spring!

Camp Stitchalot is just around the corner!

There are still tickets available for Camp Stitchalot Spring!

It is being held in lovely Pleasant Lake, Michigan the weekend of March 21-23, 2014. There is additional sewing time available on Thursday, if you buy a Thursday night ticket. Camp is held at the Hankerd Inn, a bed and breakfast run by a quilter! So, there's lots of sewing space. The owner is very accommodating of special diets, and we have a kitchen that we can access at all hours. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, and most have a private bathroom with shower.

There is also lots of space to sit and chat!

This one is very exciting! It's all about bags! You use them, you make them, you love to put stuff in them. Now come and make bags with bag making experts Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness and Kristin Link of Sew Mama Sew.

Sara Lawson is a bag maker, quilter, pattern writer, and blogger who has just published her first book, Big-City Bags: Sew Handbags with Style, Sass, and Sophistication. She is working on a second book, and is the seamstress behind many amazing quilt themed dresses.

Kristin Link is a former educator who has adapted her love of teaching and training to focus on the wonderful world of sewing. Her favorite things to sew are bags, clothes and gifts for family and friends. She is the founder and owner of the online collaborative sewing community Sew Mama Sew. She teaches classes through Craftsy called Bag Making Basics.

Sara Lawson will be talking about interfacing, sewing with vinyl, installing magnetic clasps and zippers, and bias tape, all while making the Camp Stitchalot bag! You don't need to be an expert to make this bag, and with help, any confident beginner can make this bag. It's a large bag for toting your crafting supplies in - with an outer pocket that will fit a 12x18" cutting mat!

Kristin Link will be teaching us her new, designed specifically for this camp, Tackle Bag! Not only is it versatile, but you will learn several techniques for installing a zipper, including making a welt pocket on the inside.

What else is great about Camp Stitchalot? Your ticket is all inclusive! For one low price, your meals, room, and classes are all included. And after classes are over, you still have your counselors and hostesses (Brenda Ratliff of Just a Bit Frayed and Pink Castle Fabrics and Rossie Hutchinson of Fresh Modern Quilts) there to help you through anything you get stuck on during open sew (the sewing room never closes!)

Tickets are limited to 30 people, so order yours today!

We hope you can make it to Camp Stitchalot next month! We have sewing machines you can rent, and Accuquilt Go cutters will be available for use during the retreat.

We also have tickets available for Camp Stitchalot Fall and Camp Stitchalot Winter.

Finishing Touches - Binding and More!

Saturday March 1, 10:15-1:15

You've mastered creating your quilt top but what next? This class will mostly cover double-fold binding techniques including how to have a perfect join at the end of the binding and how to create lovely mitered corners. Cut your binding time easily by 1/5 by learning how to entirely machine sew your binding. Learn a machine binding technique with a flange that mimics piping. We will cover how to make bias binding as well as straight on-the-grain binding and why you would choose either. We will also discuss ideas for backing your quilt and how to make a pieced backing and how to create that perfect quilt label.

Using a quilt sandwich (a pillow sized "fake" quilt), you will learn the basic techniques and then have a sample to look at once you get home. There should be plenty of class time for discussion and for you to get started on one of your own quilts as well.  There is more information on what to bring on the class info page.
Prerequisites: While a basic class, this class assumes that the student has made at least one quilt top of any size and understands the concepts of 1/4" seams.

Intermediate Improv: Curvy Improv with Kathryn Schmidt

Thursday, March 13, 6-9 pm

Sewing smooth free-form curves is a technique with a difficult reputation but it’s time to let everyone in on the secret—it is super easy to do. You’ll be delighted to add this skill to your repertoire, but be warned…it’s very addicting and you won’t want to quit! You will learn multiple easy ways to handle curves without stressing out. There is no curve that cannot be conquered!

This is a technique class so there is not a specific project to make. We will discuss several methods of working with free-form curves.

Bring your basic sewing and cutting implement, along with fabric (see class page for requirements).

Kathryn Schmidt has been quilting for over 35 years, and is the author of Rule Breaking Quilts. She blogs at Quirks, Ltd.

Look around your stash!  Is there are color you could use more of?

Mini Confetti Dots! A stash builder!

I know, right now, I'm all about lime and citron! And I'm always on the look out for coral, teal, and a good mustard yellow.

At Pink Castle Fabrics, we have all the Stash Builders in stock tagged by color!  Just click on the "Stash Builders" link on the right side of the screen at PinkCastleFabrics.com and choose the color you are looking for!

You can also get one color a month delivered to your door in our Stash Stack Club! After a full year you will have the full color spectrum and a complete stash of high quality brand name quilting cottons! You can join in or cancel at any time!

A Stash Builder is any fabric that reads as just one color. Often they are one color and white, or tone on tone prints. These make it easy for you to add them into any project, because you only have to match one color! And we have some fun new ones in.

Like Lotta Jansdotter's Sylvia collection:

I really love these pretty Spring Street Calico prints from Dear Stella:

Another one that caught my eye is this Ticking Stripe:

And I really think Citrus from Windham has a lot of potential for the modern quilter's stash. It's clean lines and bright colors, a mix of low volume prints and vibrant checks and stripes.

And a fun, texty one (though not so new) is this one by Sweetwater, from Moda:

And there's lots more great, versatile fabrics to be discovered in the Stash Builder's section. And right now they are 15% off with coupon code Stash15 at checkout!

Don't forget the golden ticket promotion is still running! For every $50 you spend at Pink Castle Fabrics, you get a golden ticket with your order. It could be worth $5-$100 off your next order, or win you  a sweet Hello Kitty sewing machine! See promotion details here!

All the pretty bundles!

It's probably no secret that I love scraps. I love them. I love piecing things that sort of coordinate but don't exactly match. Which is why I am so drawn to low volume fabrics and projects. I would love to have a quilt without duplicate fabrics anywhere, each print it's own unique little snowflake.

And Pink Castle sells scrap packs! 11 ounces of fabric - which is about 2 yards, roughly 4-9" wide by 44" long, and randomly assembled.

But maybe that is too mysterious for you. The next best thing to scraps is precuts!

Charm squares are 5" squares, from a single line of fabric, with all the fabrics represented.

The next size up is the fat sixteenth, a 9x11" cut. We stock several fat 16th packs, each with 32 unique prints. These are chosen by Brenda and the staff of Pink Castle!

Currently, there are four: 32 Rainbow Way (pictured), Citrus Sunrise, Low Volume, and Scrappy Jewels.  32 Rainbow Way is also available as a Fat Quarter and a Half Yard Bundle.

The next larger size is the layer cake, a 10x 10 precut, like the charm square, it comes from one line of fabric.

Mini Confetti Dots fat eight bundle, 30 prints!

The next size, and my favorite, is the fat eighth! A fat eighth is 9 inches by 22 inches. Some of these are assembled by the Pink Castle staff, and some of these are precuts from entire fabric lines that come to us from the companies. Or you can go for the mystery bundle, fat eighth packs - 8 fat eighths for $8 - come in Rainbow, Warm, and Cool flavors.

Catnap Coordinating Solids Fat Quarter Bundle
Fat Quarters are next! Fat Quarters are 18" x 21".  And many of these have recently been marked down, no coupon needed. We have solid bundles, fabric line bundles, and blogger bundles - which are bundles put together by quilters and sewists, local and from around the world.

Urban Patch Organic Half Yard Bundle from Monaluna
We also carry half yard bundles and jelly rolls ( which are 2.5" x 44" strips)

Take a look through our bundles pages!
